In the summer, you can enjoy outdoor events at Vedder Park and savor treats from the many food trucks along the route. Locals also enjoy tubing down the river when the flow isn't too high and having bonfires in the evenings. Here are some highlights and activities you can enjoy while exploring the Vedder River Trail:

Hiking, Biking and Horseback Riding

Visitors can hike, bike, or ride on horseback along a gravel path that loops around the Vedder River. Your journey starts at Vedder Park, where you can park and enter the trailhead from several openings. As you progress along the gravel trail, you will weave through tall trees and catch glimpses of the river through the greenery. The first notable offshoot is the Peach Creek Trail, where you can view the salmon spawning process. This trail reconnects to the Vedder Trail and can also be accessed from the Lickman parking lot. Continuing along the Vedder Trail, you will find several openings to the Buxton Brook Trail and cross various bridges. The next stop is the Great Blue Heron Reserve, accessible only on foot. You can lock up your bike to explore the reserve or continue along the trail. Next, you will pass through the Browne Creek Wetlands and along a stretch of road with farmland views to the right and mountain views ahead. After passing under power lines, dismount your bike and cross the Keith Wilson Bridge to the other side. Traveling back under the power lines, you can enjoy more open farmland views. Once you pass Yarrow, you will re-enter the forested trail with views of the Vedder River. On your right, you will pass the Vedder River Campground, a rocky cliff, and travel down and up a steep slope before exiting the forested path. Near the end of your journey, cross the Vedder Bridge via a wide sidewalk, re-enter Vedder Park past the roundabout, and enjoy the pump track or more views of the Vedder River. Enjoy this experience with the whole family with our bike and bike trailer rentals. From March to August, you can also bring seniors along for a free trishaw ride provided by UFV students.

Wildlife Spotting at the Blue Heron Nature Reserve

The Vedder River Rotary Trail offers numerous opportunities to spot various bird species, including eagles, bats, ducks, and, of course, blue herons. Along the trail, you'll also come across the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve, where you may see even more blue herons, explore trails, and take in stunning landscape views. You might also encounter squirrels, deer, and other small mammals along the way. Remember to bring your binoculars and camera.

Fishing and Salmon Spawning Viewing

The Vedder River is renowned for its excellent fishing opportunities. It serves as a habitat for a diverse range of salmon species, including chinook, coho, and chum, making it a popular destination for anglers. During the fishing season, the riverbanks are lined with fishermen immersed knee-deep in the pursuit of their catch. In the fall, you can witness the incredible Salmon Run as the salmon leap upriver to spawn. For more information on salmon spawning and viewing opportunities, walk along the Peach Creek Trail, which features informative displays that guide you through its various stages.

Photography Opportunities

If you're a photography enthusiast, the Vedder River Rotary Trail will spoil you for choice. The ever-changing vistas, the play of light through the trees, and the river's reflections create a picturesque backdrop for stunning photographs. From macro shots of delicate wildflowers to sweeping landscape panoramas, the trail offers endless opportunities to unleash your creativity.

Dog-Friendly Opportunities

Leashed dogs are welcome along all areas of the trail. The Vedder Park access point offers the convenience of two dog parks, catering to both small and large breeds. At the Lickman access point, you can also find a leash-free trail with a vast landscape to enjoy with your pet.

Whether you're seeking adventure, tranquility, or a chance to connect with wildlife, this trail has it all. From scenic hiking and wildlife spotting to fishing and cycling, the possibilities for outdoor enjoyment are endless.
